After learning about CrossFit in early 2008, Whitney and I went to the Ranch in Aromas, CA the site of the 1st CrossFit Games to get our Level 1 Cert. We moved back to Maui and opened CrossFit Maui in 2009, which was located in our garage. We found a spot in Kihei and opened CrossFit Kihei in January 2012. After searching for 3+ years for a spot in Kahului we found the current location of CrossFit Maui, a 12,000 sq/ft spot (393 Lehuakona St.,Kahului).

Trial and error and learning from early mistakes eventually led us to figure out some key concepts about what works and what doesn’t work in the fitness industry.

Four of the necessary keys we have learned that need to be in place for a school of fitness are as follows:

  • World-Class Facility where students train (ample square footage, equipment etc…)Fundamentals Program (12-20 personal training sessions to screen strengths and weaknesses, to teach the movements properly, and to evaluate and eventually graduate students based on our physical Benchmarks).
  • Develop coaches into fitness professionals through a system that teaches them the practical, technical, academic, and financial/business side of running a fitness facility.
  • Follow a sustainable and efficient business model

Today, CrossFit Maui continues to use the CrossFit method to get people fit, and together with Madlab, we are working to professionalize the fitness industry through raising fitness professionals and getting students more fit than they ever imagined. Currently, we have eleven coaches our team.

We teach basic to advanced level classes in functional exercise, athletic conditioning, plyometrics, kettlebell training, Olympic weightlifting, medicine ball and dumbbell training, power-lifting, gymnastics, rowing, running and jumping rope. Our athletes are extremely diverse in their experience, conditioning, and lives; and include students, business executives, stay at home & working moms, college & pro athletes, doctors, realtors, teachers, and martial artists. We utilize CrossFit as our primary training method, and focus our students on optimizing physical competence in each of 10 recognized fitness domains:

  • Endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen (cardiovascular/respiratory endurance).
  • Stamina - The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy. (capacity to maintain repetitive muscular movements)
  • Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  • Flexibility – the ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint
  • Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time
  • Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  • Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a single distinct movement.
  • Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  • Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s center of gravity in relation to its support base.
  • Accuracy– The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

The stimulus provided is always varied and the results are dramatic. The atmosphere is one of support and camaraderie to anyone willing to put in the work.

Every time you walk through our door you will be guided by one of our coaches, who will lead you through our WOD “Workout of the Day”. Unlike most gyms we provide direction, supervision and motivation enabling you to work safely at your full potential – all you need to do is show up. If you can do this we will GUARANTEE RESULTS.
